About the stone

Emerald is the green variety of beryl, its distinctive colour created by trace amounts of chromium and vanadium. Among the most ancient and revered of gemstones, fine emeralds have been treasured since antiquity, from Cleopatra’s mines in Egypt to the royal collections of Mughal India.

The most commercially significant emerald sources today are Colombia, which produces the benchmark for intense warm green colour, and Zambia, known for cooler, bluish-green stones of exceptional clarity. Emerald is May’s birthstone and symbolises growth, harmony and vitality.

How to choose an emerald

Colour above all. The ideal emerald colour is a rich, medium-to-dark green with strong saturation and no brown or yellow tones. Colombian stones are often described as having a warm, slightly yellowish green; Zambian stones trend toward a pure, slightly bluish green.

The jardin. Emeralds almost invariably contain inclusions, referred to in the trade as the “jardin” (garden). These are expected and do not necessarily reduce desirability. What matters is whether the inclusions affect colour, transparency or structural integrity.

Treatment (oiling). Most emeralds are oiled to fill surface fractures. This is acceptable and has been standard practice for centuries, but the degree of oiling must be disclosed. Heavily oiled or resin-filled stones are worth significantly less than minor-oil or no-oil specimens.

Cut. The classic emerald cut, a rectangular step cut with truncated corners, was developed specifically to protect the stone’s corners while showcasing its colour. Oval and cushion cuts are also popular.
