Padparadscha is among the rarest and most beautiful of all gemstones, a sapphire unlike any other, displaying a distinctive salmon-pink to orange colour that evokes a lotus blossom at sunset. The name comes from the Sinhalese word for the lotus flower. Sri Lanka is the primary source of true padparadscha.

What makes padparadscha extraordinary is the precise combination of pink and orange. Too pink and it is merely a pink sapphire; too orange and it is an orange sapphire. The genuine padparadscha occupies a narrow, exquisite middle ground that gemological labs assess carefully. This rarity, combined with growing global awareness, has made padparadscha one of the most sought-after and investment-worthy of all coloured gemstones.

How to identify and choose a padparadscha

Colour is everything. True padparadscha must display a balanced mix of pink and orange, the salmon or sunset tone that defines the variety. Certification is non-negotiable; the colour range is narrow and assessment requires expert evaluation.

Certification from a recognised lab. Only a gemological certificate can verify padparadscha status. Our in-house lab assesses colour, origin and treatment to the same standards as international institutions.

Origin. Sri Lanka (Ceylon) is the defining origin for padparadscha. Stones from Madagascar and Tanzania can also carry the designation, though the finest and most valuable specimens are typically Sri Lankan.

Untreated status. Unheated padparadscha sapphires command a significant premium. Heat treatment can alter colour and should be disclosed.
