About the stone
The ruby is the red variety of corundum, the same mineral family as sapphire, coloured by the presence of chromium. Exceptional chromium content not only creates a vivid red but also causes fluorescence, making the finest Burmese rubies appear to glow from within.
The most prized rubies come from Mogok, Burma (Myanmar), where conditions produced the legendary “pigeon’s blood” colour: a pure, vibrant red with no brownish or purplish overtones. Mozambique has emerged as a significant modern source, producing vivid, high-quality rubies that rival Burmese stones in colour.
The ruby is July’s birthstone and has carried associations with passion, power and protection across cultures for millennia. Among coloured gemstones, fine rubies consistently command the highest per-carat prices at international auction.
How to choose a ruby
Colour is everything. The ideal ruby colour is a pure, vivid red, neither too dark nor too pink, without brown or orange tones. Pigeon’s blood red is the benchmark; any deviation reduces value significantly.
Fluorescence. In natural daylight, a fine ruby’s chromium content creates a reddish fluorescence that adds a warmth and glow absent in synthetic or treated stones. This is one of the characteristics our lab tests for.
Clarity. Nearly all rubies contain inclusions; completely eye-clean rubies are exceptionally rare and command a premium. The inclusions should not affect the colour or structural integrity of the stone.
Treatment disclosure. Heat treatment is standard and acceptable; lead-glass filling (fracture-filling) significantly reduces value and should always be disclosed. Glass-filled rubies are dramatically cheaper, and should be.
Origin certification. A gemological certificate confirming Burmese or Mozambique origin adds measurable value and investment credibility to a fine stone.
