About the stone

A sapphire’s beauty lies in the depth and saturation of its colour. The finest blue sapphires display a velvety, royal blue that holds its richness in all lighting conditions. Beyond classic blue, sapphires appear in every colour of the spectrum, from yellow and pink to the highly prized padparadscha, a salmon-pink unique to Sri Lanka.

Ceylon (Sri Lankan) and Burmese sapphires are the most esteemed in the market, with Ceylon stones particularly valued for their cornflower and royal blue hues. As September’s birthstone, the sapphire has long symbolised wisdom, loyalty and nobility, making it a meaningful choice for engagement rings and milestone gifts alike.

How to choose a sapphire

Colour first. The most important factor in a sapphire is its colour: saturation, hue and tone together determine value far more than any other quality. Look for vivid, even colour without excessive darkness or greyish tones.

Clarity. Unlike diamonds, sapphires are not graded on a formal clarity scale, but fine stones will be eye-clean or have inclusions that do not detract from the colour or brilliance.

Cut. A well-cut sapphire maximises colour saturation and minimises colour zones. Our lapidary cuts stones specifically to bring out their best colour.

Carat weight. Fine sapphires above two carats are increasingly rare; expect the per-carat price to step up significantly beyond this threshold.

Always insist on certification and disclosed treatment. Heat treatment is widespread and acceptable when disclosed. Untreated, no-heat stones command a significant premium.
