About the stone
Spinel is one of gemology’s great rediscoveries. Historically confused with ruby (the famous “Black Prince’s Ruby” in the British Crown Jewels is in fact a red spinel), it has only recently claimed its deserved recognition as a gemstone in its own right.
Spinel crystallises in the cubic system, producing well-formed octahedral crystals with exceptional brilliance. It occurs in a stunning range of colours: vivid red, intense pink, electric blue (cobalt spinel), lavender, orange and grey. The finest stones come from Burma (Mogok), Sri Lanka and Vietnam.
Unlike ruby and sapphire, spinel is rarely treated. What you see is natural. This, combined with its increasing recognition among informed collectors, makes fine spinel one of the more compelling coloured-gemstone opportunities in the current market.
How to choose a spinel
Colour intensity. Vivid, saturated colour is the primary value driver. For reds and pinks, look for pure, strong saturation without brown or grey modifiers. Cobalt blue spinel is extraordinarily rare and commands premium prices.
Untreated status. Spinel is almost always sold in its natural, untreated state; confirm this on the certificate.
Brilliance. Spinel’s cubic crystal structure gives it single refraction and exceptional brilliance; it disperses light beautifully. A well-cut spinel should show strong light return.
Origin. Burmese spinel, particularly from Mogok, is the most prized. Sri Lankan and Vietnamese stones are also well-regarded.
